Mouth Painter – Arkturus Suite (SHR 14)

Second album from Mouth Painter.  This one is all instrumental…pedal steel, flute, saw, bass guitar.  Two side-long tracks that delve in and out of modern, western exotica and “newer” age. (37 min. cassette)
Side One:  Arkturus Suite
Side Two:  In the Verdant Slough

praise:
“An all-instrumental follow-up to their great 2018 debut LP Aloha … The blend of Valerie Osterberg’s saw and Barry Walker Jr’s pedal steel is really something to behold. Shorn of vocals this time, the music is much odder sounding, with a slippery progressive edge that is wildly compelling. A splendid lateral drift through several popular dimensions”

[esc] – portastudio (SHR 11)

Deranged hooks.  Lo-fi, pop out of Portland, OR.  Using primarily a keyboard and his voice, this album was recorded by drummer Ben Dahmes on his phone while he was on tour with Roselit Bone during the summer of 2017.  And it must be said…the cover artwork is a photograph Ben took of a passing desert landscape, on said tour, using an underwater disposable camera submerged in a bag of water.

“If John and Alan Lomax took a detour through Mario’s warp level, to bump, grind, and sashay with Prismo at the Center Of All Things, perhaps it might sound a little something like the greasy falsetto funk, synth jams, and surreal sad sack singer/songwriter seductions that comprise Portastudio.”

“the best Portland album of 2017”  -Scott Derr, Turn! Turn! Turn!, Black Jack Records
